If nighttime is where it unravels...

She told me she felt “out of control” every night the minute she got home from work.

For months, she’d been trying to cut out anything she considered a “trigger food,” (i.e. most conventionally-referred "bad" foods) hoping the restriction would keep things calm.

Instead, the opposite happened.

By the time dinner rolled around, she was already tense, hungry, and worried she’d mess up again.

She’d white-knuckle her way through the evening, only to end up in the pantry after the rest of the house was quiet.

One night she finally said, “I don’t even want half of what I’m eating, but the second I tell myself I can’t have it, it’s all I can think about.”

So we tried something that felt completely counterintuitive to her.

Instead of cutting those foods out, she started practicing a small, permission-based pause - checking in with what she actually wanted, then letting herself include it without micromanaging the portion, and setting up her day in a way that supported her energy and blood sugar levels beforehand.

It took a few days for it to feel less scary.

But within a couple of weeks, something shifted in a way she didn’t expect.
The frantic urgency softened, and the “pantry nights” started spreading further apart.

Before long, her binge episodes dropped from most evenings to only a couple times that month, without tightening a single rule or adding more willpower.

She said it felt strange that doing less created more stability, but that’s how restriction works: it creates the very chaos people are trying to avoid.

It’s easy to assume you need more discipline when food feels chaotic. That’s usually where people are after bouncing between strict eating and moments that feel completely out of control. You might already know a lot about nutrition. At some point though, it all starts to blur together and it’s hard to tell what actually applies to you anymore. This came up in a session recently. There was so much information, so many past rules, that it had quietly drowned out any sense of what felt right in...

Most people who come to me for nutrition help think they need a better meal plan. More structure. More discipline. More rules. But what I see as a dietitian is something different. People already know a lot about nutrition. They’ve tried the plans. They’ve followed the rules. The problem is those systems collapse the moment life gets busy, stressful, or unpredictable. Real life doesn’t follow meal plans. Real life needs flexibility. Inside the Unlocked Nutrition & Food Freedom Community, we...

Hey Reader, A pattern I see often in my work as a dietitian starts very well-intentioned. Someone decides they want to “be good” with food that day. Breakfast gets pushed later or skipped because mornings are busy. Lunch stays small because they want to stay “on track.” Snacks feel unnecessary or indulgent, so they skip those too. For most of the afternoon, it feels like they’re doing everything right. Then evening arrives. Suddenly the kitchen feels louder. Hunger feels sharper. The pantry...
