Why your nutrition plan keeps falling apart

Hey Reader

One of the most common conversations I have with people in my nutrition practice starts the same way.

They tell me they’ve tried everything.

Meal plans.

Macros.

Tracking apps.

And for a little while, it usually works!

Then life happens.

Workdays run long.

Stress shows up.

Schedules get unpredictable.

Suddenly the plan that looked great on paper becomes almost impossible to follow.

So they assume the problem is them.

They think they just need more discipline.

But what I see as a dietitian is often something very different.

The nutrition advice didn’t fail because they lacked willpower.

It failed because it wasn’t designed to survive real life.

A nutrition plan that only works on calm, organized days will almost always fall apart on busy, messy ones.

And most of us live far more of the second kind.

Sustainable nutrition is from building eating patterns flexible enough to keep working when life gets complicated.

When people start focusing on that instead, something shifts.

Food becomes less stressful.

Choices become clearer.

And consistency finally starts to feel possible.

If you’re looking for a more practical, compassionate way to approach nutrition, the Unlocked Nutrition & Food Freedom Community is where I share tools, coaching, and resources designed to help you build eating habits that actually work in real life. You can learn more about the community here.

It’s easy to assume you need more discipline when food feels chaotic. That’s usually where people are after bouncing between strict eating and moments that feel completely out of control. You might already know a lot about nutrition. At some point though, it all starts to blur together and it’s hard to tell what actually applies to you anymore. This came up in a session recently. There was so much information, so many past rules, that it had quietly drowned out any sense of what felt right in...

Most people who come to me for nutrition help think they need a better meal plan. More structure. More discipline. More rules. But what I see as a dietitian is something different. People already know a lot about nutrition. They’ve tried the plans. They’ve followed the rules. The problem is those systems collapse the moment life gets busy, stressful, or unpredictable. Real life doesn’t follow meal plans. Real life needs flexibility. Inside the Unlocked Nutrition & Food Freedom Community, we...

Hey Reader, A pattern I see often in my work as a dietitian starts very well-intentioned. Someone decides they want to “be good” with food that day. Breakfast gets pushed later or skipped because mornings are busy. Lunch stays small because they want to stay “on track.” Snacks feel unnecessary or indulgent, so they skip those too. For most of the afternoon, it feels like they’re doing everything right. Then evening arrives. Suddenly the kitchen feels louder. Hunger feels sharper. The pantry...
